A Kentucky woman was arrested on multiple charges after allegedly leaving a 91-year-old man stranded in his car in 101-degree heat after he refused to buy her cigarettes.
The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that Nikki Reed Hoskins, 37, was arrested on Thursday, July 2, at her residence after police received a 911 call about an elderly man who had been left in his car in the excessively hot weather. When officers arrived, they learned that Hoskins had argued with the man after he refused to buy her cigarettes and allegedly reached into the vehicle and took the keys.
Unable to operate his vehicle without the keys, the unnamed elderly victim was stuck dealing with the heat until a passerby called 911. After helping the man, police reportedly learned that Hoskins had walked to a residence nearby. When police arrived and ordered her to step outside, she refused. Once they confirmed she owned the residences, they learned she had outstanding warrants. Eventually, police made their way inside and found her hiding in the bedroom.

When deputies attempted to take her into custody, she allegedly struck one of them. The news release also states that she appeared “unsteady on her feet, had slurred speech and glassy bloodshot eyes and was determined to be under the influence.”
Ultimately, Hoskins was charged with “wanton endangerment first degree; theft of my unlawful taking; assault 3rd degree Police Officer is victim; menacing.”
Additionally, she was charged with two outstanding warrants related to failures to appear in court. One appearance is reportedly for missed child support payments and the other is related to alcohol intoxication in a public place. She was charged with contempt of court as a result.
The 91-year-old man was not named in the news release, nor did the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office give information on whether or not he required medical treatment.
