The former first lady, 62, appeared on the Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso podcast on May 17, and she argued that many supporters of President Donald Trump have been driven more by economic frustration and desperation than hatred. She added that she believes it’s unfair to simply “pigeon hole” all MAGA voters as racists.
Obama addressed the struggles faced by working class Americans and said that many people felt abandoned by a system that “doesn’t” always work for them.

“When you don’t have a chance and you’re doing everything you’re supposed to do…” she explained. “That makes you angry, and it makes you susceptible to find someone to blame other than the people who are rightfully a part of the problem.”
Obama added that she couldn’t “look some people in the face and tell them [they] have no right to be angry.”
“So, you can’t just pigeon hole them and say you just don’t care and you’re racist or whatever you’re thinking,” she continued. “This is an act of, ‘I don’t know what else to do.’ I just wish we had more leaders that were figuring out how to do more for the middle class, for the working folks because those are the folks who are drowning in this economy.”
