The husband-and-wife duo worked with artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby on the piece, which is on display at the Obama Presidential Center — opening on June 19 — in the museum’s Hope and Change lobby. The portrait features the former first lady, 62, seated in front, with the former president of the United States, 64, seated at a table behind her.
“At first blush, I don’t know if you’ve seen this. You tell me, does anything jump out at you as a little off about this portrait, which is for the President Barack Obama library and museum?” Kelly, 55, asked on the Wednesday, June 17 episode of her podcast. “He’s in the back! She looks like she was president, and he looks like he was first partner … So prominent … It’s not by accident … This Crosby ‘artiste’ says the portrait is about putting Michelle on the same level as Barack.”

The political commentator also read a quote from Crosby reflecting on her work of art: “I was thinking of a composition that would not preference one Obama over the other, but to treat them equally. It’s like, yes, he was the president, and she is this incredible, powerful, amazing, super respected person. They are like equal.”
“You would think that she were the president of the United States, and by the way, you won’t be shocked to hear Michelle is the one who picked this Crosby for the product, saying she’s wanted her to work with them for a while,” Kelly added. “Now we see why.”

On Monday, June 15, the IMO podcast host and the politician shared a video on Instagram of themselves seeing the portrait for the first time and chatting with Crosby.
In the clip, Barack seemed happy with the colorful piece as he declared, “It looks fantastic,” and Michelle said, “You know how long I’ve been wanting this woman to do something with and for me.”
