Claire Abernathy says a decision she made as a teenager changed her life forever, and now, years after undergoing a double mastectomy, she’s speaking out against the surgeon who performed the procedure.
Abrernathy was 14 years old when she began transitioning from female to male and put on testosterone, per Fox News. Eight months later, she had both of her breasts removed. However, after deciding to detransition, Abernathy has claimed that Dr. Alan Dulin “stole her girlhood.”
“You killed the woman I was supposed to become. You took advantage of a little girl’s confusion and a family’s trust to perform an unnecessary, disfiguring surgery on a child who was barely through puberty,” she wrote in an open letter published on Genspect on June 11.
Abernathy went on to describe Dulin as “a sick man who used a medical degree as permission to disfigure children.”

“I have lived every day for the last seven years with the physical and psychological wreckage you left behind,” she continued. “When I was fourteen years old, you took a scalpel to my healthy body and amputated my breasts.”
Abernathy also claimed that parts of her body “were literally rotting” because of Dulin’s “ego.”
“Now, I live every single day with a numb, hollow chest covered in the disfiguring scars you chose to carve into me,” the letter continued. “I’m left to cope with the constant, agonizing reminders of the damage you inflicted. There is an electrical current that constantly hums and zaps beneath my skin, a manifestation of the trauma you inflicted and sewed into my nerves.”
According to the American Institute for Plastic Surgery, Dulin is “a board-certified cosmetic surgeon with advanced training in both cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery,” and he still currently works in the Dallas, Texas, area.
