Vice President JD Vance Admits He’s ‘OK’ With Wife Usha Not Converting to Christianity

Vice President JD Vance has seemingly come to terms with the fact that his wife, Usha Vance, has no plans to convert to Christianity.

“I’m OK with that,” JD, 41, admitted in an interview with NBC News on Monday, May 26. “What I’d say about Usha is that one of the things I love about her is that she’s brilliant, but she’s also fiercely independent.”

“You know, fundamentally Christianity is a faith where, if you believe in it, you would like other people to believe in it, too, and that’s going to be particularly true for those that you’re closest to and those you love,” he continued.

The former Ohio senator previously sparked backlash in October 2025 during a Turning Point USA event when he was asked about raising his and Usha’s three children as Christians in an “intercultural-racial-religious household.”

JD said that Usha, 40, was raised with the Hindu faith, but when they met, he considered them both to be “atheist or agnostic.” However, he converted to Catholicism in 2019.

“Most Sundays, Usha will come with me to church,” he explained to the crowd. “Do I hope, eventually, that she is somehow moved by the same thing that I was moved in by church? Yeah, honestly, I do wish that, because I believe in the Christian gospel and I hope eventually my wife comes to see it the same way.”

His remarks ruffled more than a few feathers and several people accused him of trying to pressure his wife into converting.

“You’ve said, movingly, @JDVance, that Usha is your greatest blessing,” one X user wrote. “Why wouldn’t you then appreciate the spiritual heritage that helped lead her to be that blessing in your life?”

“How hard is it to say that you respect your wife’s Hindu faith and her decision not to convert?” another person added. “Just the way she would about you?”
