Golf legend Tiger Woods has broken his silence following his DUI arrest — and addressed his future in golf.
The 15-time major champion, 50, was taken into custody after rolling his car in Florida on Friday March 27 when he reportedly clipped a truck.
“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” Woods shared in a statement on X on Tuesday, March 31. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health.”
The golf icon added that the decision was essential to “prioritize my well-being” and work toward “lasting recovery,” while also asking for privacy for his family during the difficult time.

According to police reports, Woods was allegedly “lethargic and slow,” sweating heavily and displaying “extremely dilated” pupils after the crash at 2am on March 27.
Officers also reportedly found two hydrocodone pills — typically prescribed for severe pain — in his possession. The golfer has struggled with injuries and had seven surgeries on his back, most recently in October, per Golf Digest.
Alongside the DUI charge, he is also facing counts of property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful urine test.
The scandal sent shockwaves through the golf world, as Woods, who has not played in a tournament since 2024, was expected to play in the Masters, which begins on April 10. His statement seemed to confirm that he will skip that tournament, though he is also signed up for the U.S. Senior Open in July, per Fox News.
“Tiger has entered the championship, simply to ensure eligibility, but will not make a decision about playing until a later date,” a USGA spokesperson told Golf Digest on March 27, before news of his accident broke.
Woods became eligible to compete in the PGA Tour Champions tour this year, after turning 50 in December.
PGA Tour president Brian Rolapp offered his support to the troubled star.
“My thoughts are with him and his family, as he takes this step” he told TMZ. “He has my full respect and support.”
This isn’t the first time Woods has admitted to having issues and needing help. He hoped to overcome a prescription pill addiction following his 2017 DUI, which he said was due to an unexpected reaction to medication and not alcohol.
