Teen Prom Queen Born With ‘2% Chance’ of Survival Dies in Car Accident on the Way to New Job

A Texas teenager who was given a 2 percent chance of survival when she was born died in a car accident last week on the way to her new job.

Makynna Tumlinson, 18, died on Wednesday, June 3, after her car rear-ended a 2007 International truck ahead of her on Texas State Highway 11, the Texas Department of Public Safety said, per CBS News.

The teenager — who was a cheerleader, student council president and was crowned prom queen — was on her way to work, her mother told CBS affiliate KXII.

“She was headed to a new job, and we had talked right before she left to go to work, and unfortunately, she was headed to work when that happened,” Stephanie Tumlinson told the outlet.

According to her mother, when Makynna was born, doctors were unsure if she would survive.

“We were given a 2 percent chance that she would make it, that she was going to be a stillborn. She beat those odds,” Stephanie said.

Makynna, of Sherman, was described by her parents as a kind and generous teenager.

“I had moms reaching out to me that I didn’t even know, saying that their kid was bullied until they met Makynna. I had always brought her up that way. Everybody has a story. You may not know their story, but you cannot judge a book by its cover,” Stephanie said.

“I’m hoping that she’s known for the girl that never turned down a friend, that she would have befriended anyone at all ages,” she added.

CBS News reported that the accident took place at 3:44 p.m., when Makynna lost control of her Chevrolet Cruz.

The truck’s driver, Hector Ivan Mejia Garcia, 37, was taken to a local hospital with suspected minor injuries, per the DPS.

The investigation remains ongoing.

“Nobody should have to bury their children,” her mother said. “It’s the hardest part. You know, I keep thinking it’s a nightmare that I’m going to wake up from and that she’s going to walk in the door.”
