SantaCon Organizer Arrested and Charged With Wire Fraud: ‘He Ran His Own Con Game’
Stefan Pildes, founder of SantaCon, was arrested for wire fraud after allegedly misusing 2.7 million dollars raised for charity on personal expenses and luxury items.
Stefan Pildes, the man behind the popular annual SantaCon day of debauchery, was arrested on Wednesday, April 15.
The United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York announced in a press release issued on Wednesday that an indictment charging Pildes, 50, with wire fraud would be unsealed and that he would appear before a magistrate judge.
“As alleged, Stefan Pildes promoted SantaCon as an event grounded in charitable giving, but instead of donating the millions of dollars he raised, he ran his own con game,” U.S. attorney Jay Clayton said in a statement.
“He took advantage of New Yorkers’ generous holiday spirit to finance his lifestyle through personal expenses, big and small,” Clayton added. “No matter how you dress it up, fraud is fraud. We are committed to protecting New Yorkers from those who exploit their enthusiasm and generosity.”
According to the indictment, Pildes allegedly defrauded tens of thousands of individuals and small-business owners who participated in the Christmas-themed event from “at least November 2019 through April 2026.”

The press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office stated that SantaCon — a bar crawl described on its website as a “charitable, non-political, nonsensical Santa Claus convention that happens once a year to spread absurdist joy” — generated “approximately $2.7 million in proceeds” from events held between 2019 to 2024.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said that the organizer donated “only a small fraction of the millions of dollars he raised for charity.”
Instead, he allegedly financed various personal ventures. “Among other things, Pildes spent SantaCon proceeds on extensive renovations to a lakefront property in New Jersey, concert tickets, luxury vacations, extravagant meals, and a luxury vehicle,” the release stated.
Pildes, of Hewitt, New Jersey, is charged with one count of wire fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
According to the SantaCon website, this year’s event in New York City was to be held Saturday, December 12. It is unclear if future events will still take place.
In the About section of the website, it states: “Santa stays safe: Santa does not drink more than Santa can handle. Doing so endangers Santa’s self, Santa’s friends, and the future of Santacon.”
