Caroline Kennedy is supporting her son, Jack Schlossberg‘s run for Congress in New York’s 12th District.

On Sunday, March 1, the former diplomat, 68 — whose father, of course, is John F. Kennedy — and her husband, Edwin Schlossberg, gave a rare interview with Mo Rocca on CBS’s Sunday Morning to discuss Jack’s candidacy.

“I don’t want to make any assumptions here, but there are about a dozen candidates running for the Democratic nomination. Who are you backing?” Rocca asked them.

“Jack for New York 12. Believe in something again,” Caroline responded, to which Edwin, 80, chimed in, “Yes, Jack. My son.”

“He’s willing to take the consequences of what people think. And we need people who can reach a new generation,” Caroline explained. “We’re not doing it with just boring talking points. He has been able to connect with people. He’s been able to show that he thinks for himself.

Rocca asked the former United States ambassador to Japan whether she thought it was “wise” that Jack, 33, doesn’t have a “formal campaign manager.”

“Well, I really trust Jack. I trust his judgment,” she answered. “I mean, some of the other people have been preparing for this for years and years, but he came to this new. I mean, he’s the outsider in this race, actually.”

Also in the interview, Rocca highlighted Jack’s impressive educational background, noting that he holds both a law degree and an MBA from Harvard and completed his undergraduate studies at Yale. Rocca pointed out that Jack “could do a lot of things” in life and “he doesn’t have to run for office.”

“I think he’d be great at this, though,” Caroline remarked. “I mean, we need people with that kind of education, and we need people who are really informed and bring a set of values and have the courage to speak up. And I think Jack does all those things.”

Edwin added that his son does things with “a sense of humor.”

Jack doesn’t just have support from his parents but also from his late sister Tatiana Schlossberg, who passed away in December from acute myeloid leukemia.

“I can tell you now that she’s still rooting for us, and that the last thing that she said to me was ‘You better win,'” he revealed.
