George Floyd’s Siblings Seek Transparency Over $19 Million Raised on GoFundMe After His Death
Three of George Floyd‘s siblings are asking for answers about the millions of dollars raised in his name after his death.
TMZ reported Tuesday, September 22, that Houston attorney Kayla Moncier — who is representing Zsazsa Floyd, LaTonya Floyd and Rodney Floyd — sent a letter to their brother, Philonise Floyd, who organized the George Floyd Memorial GoFundMe, on August 11. (The fund has since been paused and deactivated on the site, as verified by Globe).
The letter claims the campaign collected about $19 million and argues that George’s siblings, as heirs, are entitled to a portion of the funds.
The family is now seeking full transparency, including GoFundMe statements, transaction histories, tax filings and other financial records detailing how the money was distributed, according to the outlet.
The letter reportedly gave Philonise 20 days to respond, with the family’s attorney saying she hoped the matter could be resolved amicably.
The family also told the outlet they contacted civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who also represents Nolan Wells‘ family.
GoFundMe’s own 2020 report listed $14.7 million raised for George’s family from more than 500,000 donors, making it the platform’s most donated-to individual fundraiser at the time.
The relatives allege they previously sought information about the funds but did not receive sufficient documentation.
Philonise previously said donations would help cover funeral and burial costs, counseling, travel related to court proceedings, and other family expenses.
He also said part of the money would go to George’s estate to support his children and their education.
George, 46, died in Minneapolis on May 25, 2020, after then-police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes during an arrest.
The video of his death spread rapidly, igniting protests across the United States and beyond over policing and racial justice.
Chauvin was later convicted of murder and manslaughter in connection with George’s death, according to official records.
