The moment unfolded on Monday, July 6, after Erika, 37, arrived at a Utah courthouse dressed in all black to face her husband’s alleged killer for the first time, The Blast reported. Robinson, 23, appeared unbothered throughout, laughing with attorney Kathy Nester just before the five-day preliminary hearing began, per the outlet.
As Globe previously reported, the hearing marks the first time Erika as well as Charlie’s parents, Robert and Kathryn Kirk, have been in a courtroom with Robinson. In a statement shared to X on behalf of the family, Erika called the proceedings a “painful reminder of his death and the loss that has irrevocably impacted our lives and the lives of his children.” The family asked for privacy, adding, “we will not be commenting further at this time.”

News of Robinson’s alleged laughter quickly drew backlash online. After Insider Wire shared the news in a post on X, a commenter wrote, “He won’t laugh when he meets his Maker either and demands an accounting for the blood that was shed and the pain caused to the innocent,” while another commented “Laughing in front of a grieving family is pure evil. How do people like this even exist?” A third commenter wrote, “He is a monster. True evil.”
Robinson, 23, faces aggravated murder charges along with felony discharge of a firearm, two counts of witness tampering, two counts of obstruction of justice, and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child. He has not yet entered a plea, and his defense is fighting to block the death penalty, according to The Blast’s report.
During testimony from Utah Valley University Police Officer Chris Bagley describing the moment Charlie was shot, Erika and her in-laws briefly left the courtroom, later returning as she leaned on a friend’s shoulder for support, per the report.
