President Donald Trump Says Marriage to Melania ‘Won’t Be Able to Match’ His Parents’ Love Story
President Donald Trump has never been one to accept defeat easily, but during his welcome speech to King Charles III, he conceded that there was one aspect of his marriage to Melania Trump that could never beat in his parents’ union.
“[My mother] came to America at 19, met my incredible father, we loved him so much, we all loved him, we loved her, we loved him: Fred. And, they were married for 63 years,” Donald, 79, said during the live speech on Tuesday, April 28.
“And, uh, excuse me, if you don’t mind, that’s a record we won’t be able to match, darling,” the former reality star continued as he turned to Melania, 56. “I’m sorry, it’s just not going to work out that way. We’ll do well, but we’re not going to do that well.”
Donald and Melania first met in 1998 when the two attended the same New York Fashion Week party. The Apprentice alum was separated from his second wife, Marla Maples, at the time, but Melania later revealed that he had a date with him at the party.
“He wanted my number, but he was with a date, so of course I didn’t give it to him,” she told Harper’s Bazaar in a 2016 interview.
They eventually began dating in 1999, with a brief split in January 2000, but the following month, Trump and the former fashion model had reconciled.
Four years later, at the Met Gala, Donald got down on one knee and officially proposed to Melania.
In January 2005, Melania walked down the aisle and a few weeks later, she and Donald sat down for an interview with the late Larry King. During their talk, Melania revealed that they were hoping to expand their family soon. (Donald was already the father to Donald Jr, Ivanka, and Eric, who he shared with first wife Ivana Trump. He later welcomed daughter Tiffany with Maples.)
“There’s nothing like a good marriage, and there’s nothing like having children. I have four great children. If you have the money, having children is great,” the future president said, chiming in. “Now, I know Melania, I’m not going to be doing the diapers. I’m not going to be making the food. I may never even see the kids, frankly. No. She will be an unbelievable mother. I’ll be a good father, but I’ll be, you know, doing my deals.”
In March 2006, they welcomed their son, Barron.
