President Donald Trump and Melania Fought Over Elon Musk Sleepovers, New Book Claims

Behind closed doors, one of President Donald Trump and Melania Trump‘s biggest White House disagreements reportedly had nothing to do with politics. Instead, it centered on Elon Musk — and whether the trillionaire should be sleeping under the same roof as the first family.

Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump, the new book by The New York Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan, claims that the then-DOGE chief asked Donald, 80, if he could sleep at the White House, according to a report from the Daily Beast, published Tuesday, June 23. The first lady objected, but was overruled and Musk, 54, ended up spending several nights in the Lincoln Bedroom.

“Other nights he stayed with friends,” the book states, per the report, “though he also told associates he had taken to using a sleeping bag on the floor of his office in the Eisenhower Building.”

Musk didn’t keep the arrangement quiet. Per the report, in May 2025, Musk told reporters the invitation came straight from Donald while the two were flying aboard Air Force One. “He’s like, ‘Hey do you want to stay over?’ and I’m like, ‘Sure,'” Musk said.

According to the outlet, Musk praised his host’s hospitality, claiming Donald would call him late at night with snack suggestions. “He’ll actually call … and say … ‘make sure you get some ice cream from the kitchen,'” Musk said, admitting he once polished off an entire tub of Häagen-Dazs caramel ice cream. “I mean, don’t tell RFK,” he joked, seemingly referring to Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The sleepover saga is just one of several domestic clashes detailed in the book, which also reportedly chronicles Donald’s penchant for DIY Oval Office touch-ups using super glue, plus a separate decor standoff in which items Melania, 56, placed in a shared second-floor living space allegedly kept disappearing.
