President Donald Trump is demanding New Mexico change its name to “New America,” adding to his ever-growing list of political name changes.

“New Mexico should immediately change its name to New America. We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America!” Trump, 80, shared via Truth Social on Monday, October 19. “The name would add great value and prestige to the State! Home Values and Incomes would rise, and you would be even prouder while saluting our beautiful American Flag! Maybe even the Crooked Elections, that New Mexico is known for, would become honest again!”

Social media users pushed back with many pointing out that The Land of Enchantment has been a part of the United States for more than 100 years.

“We’ve got serious problems at home and wars threatening to spiral out of control, and this idiot is worried about renaming a state? For God’s sake, Trump, it’s the presidency, not another one of your damn hotels,” one critic tweeted.

“How about he focuses on things to improve our lives? But no…renaming things, building arches and golf courses and cozying up to commie dictators,” another wrote.

This is not the first time the former reality star has hinted at changing the name of the 47th state. He shared a series of AI-generated images to Truth Social in September.

“So much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible State,” he wrote.

New Mexico’s governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, pushed back, claiming “New Mexico’s name isn’t up for debate.”

“It’s been ours since before the United States existed,” she posted on X on September 6. “While the President tries to distract Americans from his disastrous war in Iran, the price of gas — and everything else — keeps rising…While the White House wastes time coloring on maps, Nuevo México is busy doing the work. 🌶️.”

Prior to setting his sights on New Mexico, Trump signed executive orders renaming the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario, though neither is legally binding under international law.
