A school shooter who claimed the lives of three children and a teacher in Bend, Oregon was stopped from further harm by a bystander, who has since been identified as the father to two girls who attend the school.
A man IDed by his brother to NBC News as 36-year-old Kaylub Giamanco saw the 16-year-old suspect enter Silver Rail Elementary School on Thursday, October 16.
According to his brother Kyle, Kaylub — a carpenter — was driving home from his lunch break and heard gunshots, before seeing the gunman go into the school. Kyle said his brother, who has a concealed-weapon permit, followed the gunman into the school’s special education room.

Kyle also reportedly claimed Kaylub doesn’t feel like a hero and feels guilty he didn’t save more people.
“Looks like the shooter has been neutralized – possibly shot by a father at the school,” emergency dispatchers said to responding officers, according to the New York Post.
Three children, ages 5, 8, and 11, were killed in the shooting, as well as a teacher. The 5-year-old victim has since been identified by family members to NBC News as Rhoam Summer.

Three senior law enforcement officials also IDed the shooter to the outlet as John J. Griffin. Per law enforcement sources, via AP, he was from Bend and used a pump-action shotgun purchased by his mother.
A 7-year-old and another teacher, age 54, were also taken to the hospital for treatment. Kyle also said he’s friends with the 7-year-old’s family, claiming the child was shot in the face and is recovering from surgery.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised Giamanco’s actions, saying in a press conference, “To the community member who heroically intervened to stop further loss of life, your actions carry a heavy emotional burden and I just want you to know that my thoughts are with you.”

Fifth grade teacher Kathy Smith, who also saw the shooter in the building, added in an interview with KPTV: “That person saw something. They did something, and that took its own courage. I’m just grateful that that person was able to apprehend the suspect.”
Authorities started receiving 911 calls around 1pm on Thursday about a shooter at the school — moments after someone in a car called 911 to report being shot at by someone with a long gun. The school went into lockdown, with officers responding a minute later.
After confirming the gunman was dead, authorities evacuated the school.
