After Karmelo Anthony was found guilty earlier this week in the murder of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, more details have been revealed from the deadly altercation at a 2025 Texas track meet.
The Collin County District Attorney’s Office said, according to The U.S. Sun and The New York Post, that the knife Anthony, 19, used to kill Metcalf is from the Walmart brand Ozark Trail.
The 6-in-1 multitool, equipped with a flashlight and 3.5-inch serrated blade, retails for approximately $13, according to the retail giant’s website. The listing describes the tool as “ideal for someone who hunts, camps or who travels often.”
While it is unclear if Anthony actually purchased the tool from the store himself before the fatal stabbing, the Post reported that the weapon was discarded after he fled the scene. Frisco Police Department school resource officer Jacob Shalz reportedly found it halfway opened, which could’ve been why Anthony had a cut on his finger when he was arrested.
According to CBS News, the blade itself was described as “about 3.5 inches long” and was “not particularly a quality knife.”
On Tuesday, June 9, Anthony was sentenced to 35 years in prison for fatally stabbing the teenager at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, in April 2025 following a brief confrontation.
Last year, during the meet at Kuykendall Stadium, Metcalf pushed Anthony, who then pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the chest. The case drew national attention due to the races of the two individuals involved. Anthony is Black, and Metcalf was white.
However, according to the Associated Press, lawyers on both sides said that race did not play a part in the deadly altercation. The jury rejected Anthony’s claims of self-defense.
A representative for Collin County Jail, where Anthony was sent after he was found guilty of murder, told TMZ that he was placed in isolation in a more secure area of the jail. According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Anthony has already filed a notice to appeal the conviction.
