Karmelo Anthony, 19, Being Held in Isolation After He’s Sentenced to 35 Years for Austin Metcalf Murder

Karmelo Anthony, who was convicted of the murder of Texas teenager Austin Metcalf and sentenced to 35 years in prison, is being held in isolation.

A representative for Collin County Jail, where the 19-year-old was sent after he was found guilty of murder on Tuesday, June 9, told TMZ that Anthony was placed in a more secure area of the jail away from other inmates.

It is unclear as to why Anthony is being held in isolation.

As Globe reported, Anthony was found guilty and sentenced on Tuesday for fatally stabbing the 17-year-old at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, in April 2025.

The Associated Press reported that the jury rejected Anthony’s claims of self-defense after the confrontation with Metcalf resulted in the teenager’s death.

Last year, during the track meet at Kuykendall Stadium, Metcalf allegedly pushed Anthony, who then pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the chest. The case drew national attention due to the races of the two individuals involved. Anthony is Black, and Metcalf was white.

However, according to the AP, lawyers on both sides said that race did not play a part in the deadly altercation.

Anthony did not testify at trial, but his mother asked for mercy after he was found guilty.

“He’s very sorry for what he did. Please, have mercy on my son,” Kala Hayes asked jurors, per the AP.

ABC affiliate WFAA reported that Metcalf’s father Jeff delivered an emotional statement in court.

“My son’s death destroyed the person I used to be,” he said. “He does not exist anymore.”

“People think grief is sadness, it is not. It is rage. Pure unfiltered rage,” he added, slamming his fist on a table.
