Donald Trump Jr. Attends Hearing for Man Accused of Killing Charlie Kirk

For Charlie Kirk‘s loved ones, Monday, July 6, marked a painful turning point — coming face to face in court with the man accused of killing him. But they did not face the moment alone.

President Donald Trump‘s eldest child, Donald Trump Jr., sat with Charlie’s family at a Utah courthouse as Tyler Robinson, 23, appeared for the opening of his preliminary hearing, according to Fox News.

Robinson is charged with aggravated murder in the September 10 assassination of the Turning Point USA founder, who was shot in broad daylight while speaking to a crowd of about 3,000 people at Utah Valley University during his The American Comeback tour.

Trump Jr. has made no secret of how deeply Charlie’s untimely and tragic death hit him. “This isn’t my strong suit, and I don’t even know how to begin to put into words the loss I am feeling right now over the assassination of Charlie Kirk,” he wrote in an elaborate statement on X.

The two shared a long history, with Charlie serving as his personal aide during the 2016 presidential campaign. Their bond continued long after the campaign trail. While Charlie became one of the most visible conservative voices aligned with the Trump family, Trump Jr. remained one of his high-profile allies in politics and media.

Charlie’s widow Erika Kirk arrived at the courthouse dressed in black and wearing sunglasses, escorted by two men in suits. His parents entered together, walking arm in arm. According to a New York Post report, Erika sat next to her mother-in-law in the courtroom.

Robinson’s parents also attended the hearing, sitting several rows behind Kirk’s family, as per PBS.

At one point, Erika was visibly overcome with emotion, resting her shoulder and wiping away tears with a handkerchief, according to the outlet.

“Every court proceeding serves as a painful reminder of his death and the loss that has irrevocably impacted our lives and the lives of his children,” the family said in a Monday statement requesting privacy, as reported by the BBC.

“We remain deeply grateful for the support, prayers, and kindness we have received. This outpouring has sustained us during the darkest days of our lives,” the statement added. The family later left the courtroom when an officer’s testimony began describing the moments surrounding Kirk’s shooting.

The five-day hearing is expected to be a pivotal moment in the case, giving the court its clearest look yet at the evidence against Robinson.

Robinson surrendered to authorities one day after the shooting and has not yet entered a plea, as per CNN.

This week’s proceedings will lean heavily on visual evidence. According to PBS, Chief Deputy Utah County Attorney Chad Grunander informed Judge Tony Graf that the state intends to present 40 to 50 exhibits, among them several videos capturing the September 10 shooting.

Graf has also arranged for the footage to play on a monitor angled away from the press videographer in the courtroom.

When testimony concludes, he will rule on whether the evidence clears the bar to send the case to trial.

Robinson’s attorneys have not publicly addressed whether he is guilty or innocent. However, attempts by his attorneys to strike the death penalty from the case have so far gone nowhere.
