Court documents filed on Tuesday, August 18, and obtained by Globe, show that Marieangela King opposed Cher’s conservatorship petition and argued that Allman, 50, doesn’t need someone appointed to oversee his personal or financial decisions. However, if the court decides a conservator is necessary, King wants to be appointed herself.
“I strongly believe that Elijah needs [a] robust, long-term treatment plan to deal with these issues,” King wrote in the filing.
However, she claimed that appointing a conservator selected by Cher, 80, could do more harm than good because Allman has allegedly been estranged from his famous mother for years.
King claimed that taking away her husband’s autonomy against his wishes would “demoralize him, thereby jeopardizing his recovery.”

She also questioned Allman’s involvement in the couple’s previous divorce proceedings, which have since been dismissed.
“The claim that Elijah voluntarily participated in our dissolution proceeding, which has since been dismissed, is also inaccurate,” King alleged. “Elijah never filed an answer.”
King claimed that the attorney who was allegedly representing Allman repeatedly said he was not in contact with him and instead suggested the divorce proceedings could be resolved through the “If I Could Turn Back Time” singer.
“This was shortly before [Cher] filed this Petition, alleging that Elijah lacks mental capacity,” King wrote.
King also insisted that there’s no need for anyone to take control of Allman’s finances, pointing out that he is currently receiving treatment at a secure psychiatric facility in New Hampshire and his assets are already under professional trust management.
However, King’s strongest allegations were aimed at her mother-in-law.
She claimed Cher and her associates have a history of using the Mermaids star’s “money, fame, and resources” to influence doctors, social workers and other professionals in an effort to interfere in her marriage and act against Allman’s wishes.
King went on to accuse Cher of engaging in a “calculated pattern of intentional prejudice, hostility, and bad faith aimed at dismantling the marital unit.”

This isn’t the first time Cher has attempted to gain legal control over Allman’s affairs. The Burlesque actress previously filed for a conservatorship over her son’s estate in December 2023 and cited his alleged mental health and substance abuse issues. However, her request for a temporary conservatorship was denied the following month, and she ultimately dropped the case later that year.
The latest court battle comes amid other legal woes for Allman. As Globe previously reported, Allman was arrested in February after allegedly trying to enter a girls’ dormitory at St. Paul’s School in New Hampshire. According to a report from the Daily Mail, he claimed he was a “prospective parent,” but the school’s rector, Kathy Giles, said he had “no affiliation” with St. Paul’s.
He was charged with two counts of simple assault, as well as criminal trespassing, criminal threatening and disorderly conduct. Allman later waived his arraignment and the case is expected to go to trial.

Three days later, Allman was arrested again and accused of breaking into a nearby home. While authorities said nothing was stolen, he allegedly caused more than $2,500 in property damage.
The mother and son’s strained relationship previously made headlines earlier this summer when The Daily Enquirer broke the news that he had secretly fathered a daughter, who is now 15. Cher didn’t learn about her granddaughter until 2021.
“Elijah has never wanted his mom to be in the kid’s life because of their damaged relationship,” a source told the outlet at the time. “He wanted to protect her from Cher.”
