Prolific Indian journalist and author Sangeetha Shinde published her powerful new book, “The Unseen Goddess,” Saturday to coincide with International Women’s Day.

The novel follows Madhuri, a young girl from a Chennai slum who must walk miles to fetch water or get to a bathroom, and who considers second-hand clothes and shoes a luxury. Like many in her social class, Madhuri is forgotten by society, by her family and by the powers that be, yet despite facing numerous adversities, she discovers her inner strength, determination, and capacity for love.

Shinde, who began her literary career at the age of 14 with a prize-winning essay on world peace, has established herself as a formidable voice in literature with a focus on women’s rights in India. “The Unseen Goddess,” her fifth book, expands on themes of gender inequality, domestic violence, and poverty, offering readers an unvarnished glimpse into the harsh realities faced by women in India’s lower socio-economic strata.

Shinde’s storytelling has earned high praise. “The Unseen Goddess” is described by Publishers Weekly as “a powerful and evocative read that sheds light on the tenacity of the human spirit,” while Kirkus Reviews calls it “an affecting portrait of poverty and resilience.”

From workshops to speaking engagements, Shinde has actively engaged with individuals worldwide to combat the trauma of abuse and oppression. As she continues to channel her experiences into literary and activist ventures, she remains a key figure empowering the marginalized, illuminating societal challenges, and inspiring change.
