After a mistrial was declared on Friday, September 4, in the case of the 36-year-old Massachusetts mother accused of killing her three young children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, Trump was asked for comment.
“It’s a shame. It’s a horrible tragedy. I see what’s happened, and it looks like it’s a hung jury,” Trump, 80, said while speaking at the White House, per the Daily Mail.
“I think the judge has said it’s going to be a mistrial, so there’s going to be another trial,” he continued. “It’s a terrible situation. Look, she did a horrible, horrible thing.”
Commenting on the legal proceedings, Trump said he’s confident justice will be served.

“Can’t be worse. But you’ll find out what the price to pay is. There’ll be a price. It’s going to be mental institution or jail or something, but I guess they’re going to go through another trial,” the commander in chief added.
Clancy, who was found unconscious in an apparent suicide attempt outside her Duxbury, Massachusetts, home in January 2023 after her children were killed, pleaded not guilty to the charges. Her defense attorney has claimed she was suffering from postpartum psychosis.
As Globe previously reported, jurors said they could not reach a unanimous verdict on whether Clancy was criminally responsible for strangling her three children. With the jury deadlocked, Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial, despite Clancy’s emergency bid to halt the proceedings, which was denied by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.

As for what happens next, the absence of a verdict does not mean Clancy goes free. Instead, per the Associated Press, the case will likely return to its pretrial status, and Clancy could still face murder charges.
For now, she remains at Tewksbury Hospital for psychiatric treatment as prosecutors decide whether to retry the case with an all-new jury or pursue another resolution, like a plea deal.
