New details are emerging about the jury at the center of Lindsay Clancy‘s closely watched murder trial.
According to a New York Post report published Friday, September 4, Clancy’s defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, inadvertently revealed that the lone holdout juror was a man as tensions escalated in the courtroom Thursday, the seventh day of deliberations. The revelation came as Reddington, 75, pressed Judge William Sullivan over both the holdout juror and how the deadlocked panel was being instructed.
At one point, Reddington asked Sullivan not to give the jury “a soft inquiry,” per the report. “I would ask that you specifically direct their attention to proof beyond a reasonable doubt and re-instruct them forcefully,” Reddington said in court.
According to the article, Sullivan pushed back. “What do you want me to do? Get a brass band?” the judge asked. “I read the instruction … the fact that I perhaps didn’t give it my full inflection, I’m sorry about that, I’m not an actor,” Sullivan added.
As Reddington continued arguing that the holdout juror was not properly applying the law, he repeatedly referred to the panelist as “he,” revealing the juror’s gender for the first time, per the New York Post. Reddington argued the juror had made statements “acknowledging doubt” but “refuses to apply the verdict” by the letter of the law, the outlet reported.
“Clearly, we have a person who, under their oath, stood in front of you yesterday … under oath looked you in the eye and lied,” Reddington said, per the report. “That juror told you that he would be able to apply the law to the facts as you asked him.”
The panel, made up of nine women and three men, had reported being deadlocked earlier in the week, prompting Sullivan to issue a Tuey-Rodriguez instruction urging jurors to keep working toward a verdict, the outlet reported.

Clancy, 36, pleaded not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility to charges she strangled her three children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months — at the family’s Duxbury, Massachusetts, home in January 2023.
As Globe previously reported, the deadlock ultimately proved unbreakable. Sullivan declared a mistrial on Friday, after Clancy’s emergency bid to halt the proceedings was denied by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. Reddington had called the situation “this travesty” while asking Sullivan to keep the jury together pending the appeal.
Clancy remains held at Tewksbury Hospital for psychiatric treatment, and prosecutors must now decide whether to retry the case or pursue another resolution.
While speaking with reporters on September 1, Reddington was asked if Clancy could emotionally endure another trial. He answered “no,” per the New York Post.
