Phil Mickelson Withdraws From Masters Amid ‘Personal Health Matter’: ‘I Will Be Watching’

The iconic Masters golf tournament is just days away, and now it will be without two of its legendary athletes. Phil Mickelson, a three-time Masters champion, announced his withdrawal from the competition.

“Unfortunately, I will not play in the Masters Tournament next week and will be out for an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter,” Mickelson shared in a statement via X on Thursday, April 2. “I have great respect for Augusta National Golf Club and it is definitely the most special week of the year.”

He continued, “I wish everyone the best of luck and I will be watching.”

While Mickelson, 55, did not share details on the “personal health matter,” the Masters is just the latest in a string of recent competitions that the legendary golfer has missed due to the family situation.

Mickelson’s announcement comes just two days after Tiger Woods pulled out of the tournament following his DUI arrest. 

“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” Woods announced via social media on Tuesday. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.”

The 2026 tournament, which is set to begin on Thursday, April 9, will mark the first time in more than three decades that neither Mickelson nor Woods will be competing for the iconic green jacket.
