Nolan Wells Update: FBI Investigating ‘Interstate Threats’ Made in Connection With Teen’s Death

The FBI is now involved in the investigation surrounding the death of Mississippi teen Nolan Wells.

According to a statement obtained by NBC affiliate WLBT on Wednesday, July 15, the FBI “has been working to address interstate threats that were received by individuals related to this matter.”

Nolan was on a trip with friends to Horn Island off of Mississippi’s Gulf Coast over the Fourth of July weekend when the group became separated. His friends later returned to shore without him, prompting a massive search that ended with the 18-year-old being found dead near the island days later.

The case has garnered intense scrutiny from the public, and it’s fueled threats to those involved.

Ashlee Cole, the mother of one of the three young men who were with Nolan on the trip, shared screenshots of messages she’d received on social media.

One message from an unknown user warned of “a package coming to your guys office in the next few days,” suggesting the package would explode before adding, “Blood. So much blood everywhere.”

The same Instagram user left multiple comments on one of Cole’s posts with varying threats.

“Ima wrap this kid in a blanket wrapped with bob [sic] wire an [sic] throw him in a lake,” one message read, while another said, “Open up your insides.”

“The Media is not the appropriate forum to further elaborate on the facts of July 4, 2026. We realize that the truth will not stop the calls for the death of our small children,” Cole wrote in the post accompanying the screenshots of multiple threats. “We have not had the opportunity to speak to the Wells-Wonsley family or their attorney. However, we are willing to directly communicate with attorney Ben Crump and the Wells-Wonsley family.”

“We will provide them with all the information known to us so their family can rest and properly mourn,” she continued. “We also want to know what happened to Nolan. We will do everything within our power to assist Nolan’s family in their quest for answers.”

Nolan’s parents, Christine Wells-Wonsley and Elmore Wonsley, hired civil rights attorney Crump to help them conduct an independent investigation of their son’s death. Authorities have not yet released the autopsy findings or toxicology reports, and his official cause of death has not been announced.
