During a recent episode of the Inside Trump Head podcast, author Michael Wolff suggested that the 56-year-old first lady’s independent business activities are putting her in “direct conflict” with her husband.
“This business of hers seems to make her the center of attention, which puts her kind of in direct conflict with the President of the United States, who, as we know, can’t stand anyone else being the center of attention,” Wolff, 73, said, per a Monday, Octobe 12 report in the Irish Star.
While Wolff said the president, 80, “doesn’t mind” Melania making money, he’s not happy when his wife steals “the limelight,” suggesting that the first lady’s Amazon documentary and her other business ventures are taking attention away from the commander in chief.
Noting that Melania has been doing a bit of a “vanishing act” this year, cohost Joanna Coles highlighted that the first lady’s limited public presence alongside her husband at White House events in 2026 has renewed concerns surrounding the pair’s 21-year marriage.

“We really have seen almost nothing of the first lady this year,” Coles said, which begs the question of what Melania is doing with the rest of her time.
An audit of Melania’s calendar by the Daily Beast in August revealed that she had appeared publicly in photographs and at official events on only 38 days this year, with the outlet adding that her limited activity made her seem like the “least hardworking” first lady “of the millennium.”
While she’s been dividing her time between Trump Tower in New York City and Mar-a-Lago in Florida, the first lady appears to be spending the least amount of her time at the White House. Her last appearance in Washington, D.C., alongside her husband came during a state visit with Chinese President Xi Jinping and first lady Peng Liyuan in September.

Her senior advisor, Marc Beckman, has since pushed back on claims that Melania has been absent, however, telling Stella Escobedo in an interview that was shared on X last month that the claims made by the “liberal media” are “ridiculous.”
“They don’t know anything about the first lady’s personal and private life,” Beckman said, encouraging journalists to focus less on the gossip surrounding the first lady and more on the “incredible achievements that our first lady has accomplished.”
