Lindsay Clancy, who was on trial in Massachusetts after being accused of murdering her three young children, may be costing taxpayers more than $500,000 per year.
Clancy, 36, has been held at Tewksbury Hospital — which provides medical and psychiatric services to adult patients — since 2023 and will continue to stay there after a mistrial was declared, defense attorney Kevin Reddington previously said, per CNN.
The state-run hospital, according to a public health hospital charge book viewed by Globe, has a standard charge of at least $1,700 per day for inpatient psychiatric treatment, which Clancy could be receiving given her state of mind after strangling her three children (Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months) and attempting suicide by cutting her wrists and neck, and jumping out of the window of her Duxbury, Massachusetts, home. She has not denied killing her children, but her defense team has argued that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis.
Therefore, if that amount were charged each day for Clancy’s stay, it would add up to about $620,500 per year for treatment.

However, the New York Post notes that Clancy could also qualify as a “chronic patient,” which bills at $1,850 per day, according to a public health hospital charge book. That would add up to at least $675,250 per year.
The publication reported that Clancy’s costs could be higher, since she’s reportedly been on suicide watch, requiring an attendant.
Still, the aforementioned costs are just an estimate and an exact amount has not been publicly disclosed.
On September 4, jurors said they could not reach a unanimous verdict on whether or not Clancy was criminally responsible in her children’s deaths. Because the jury remained deadlocked, Judge William Sullivan formally declared a mistrial — which means that the trial resulted in no verdict.
Prosecutors must decide whether or not they want to go to trial again with a new jury. They could also offer a plea deal to Clancy.
The mother of three — who is now paralyzed from the waist down following her attempt to take her own life — pleaded not guilty to the charges against her.
