Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s daughter, Apple Martin, suffered a lackluster music debut that got two thumbs down from most critics. However, a source tells Globe that her mom is convinced it was just a blip — and she’s mapping out a ferociously ambitious career path, which is making her feel claustrophobic and pressured.
“Apple has been hit very hard by the negative reaction to her performance, and the comments have been brutal,” the source says. “She’s sensitive, so all the talk about nepotism and her being out of her depth has left her feeling very defeated.”
The source adds that Apple, 21, is “upset” about the criticism and she’s “lashing out at her mom” as a result.
“She’s complaining that she’s pushed her too hard to be in the spotlight,” the source explains. “Gwyneth is telling Apple she can’t let this derail her, and that she understands that it’s hard to block out the haters — but as far as she’s concerned, the only way to handle this is to get back on stage as soon as possible.”
However, the source says that the Vanderbilt student’s “not ready” and “she wants to take a major breather.”
Apple, whose single was released on October 28, “wants to see the reaction to that and then decide the next steps,” according to the source.

“But Gwyneth won’t hear it,” the source continues. “She’s telling Apple she needs to get a thicker skin, and that this is just a healthy learning experience.”
“Gwyneth doesn’t believe she’d be doing Apple any favors by backing down on this, and she knows her daughter and says she knows what is best for her,” the source adds. “No doubt it’s coming from a loving place, but it’s starting to suffocate Apple.”
As Globe previously reported, a viral TikTok video featuring Apple performing on stage didn’t receive glowing praise, with one person writing in the comments section, “Someone really needs to tell her.”
“Ok, it can’t be as bad as this sounds, is something wrong with acoustics?” another questioned.
However, not everyone slammed Apple’s performance — several people defended her as well.
