New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is continuing to face demands that he not show up at Ground Zero on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
On Tuesday, September 8, family members of people who died as a result of the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon gathered on the steps of City Hall to ask the mayor, 34, not to come.
“This mayor is not serving us,” Charles Wolf, whose wife died that day, said, per Fox News Digital. “He’s serving himself. We are asking respectfully that he not show up. Even though there is going to be other politicians there, these are the politicians that helped us push beneficial laws through and literally held our hand during that time.”
Wolf added that “trauma is revived during the ceremony,” so he is asking: “Mayor Mamdani, please do not come.”
In recent weeks, Mamdani has taken a lot of heat in regards to his prior comments about 9/11 as well as his personal affiliations.
In 2023, Mamdani looked back at that fateful day in American history and wrote in a post on X, “Nearly 3,000 New Yorkers died on 9/11; 22 years later, the death hasn’t stopped.”
“We mourn our neighbors who died that day,” he added. “The hundreds of thousands who died in the wars that followed. The unknown millions injured & displaced. In their memory, we work toward a better world.”

However, some people online were taken aback by his use of the word died, when the people in the United States were murdered. Islamic terrorist organization al-Qaeda hijacked multiple airplanes and attacked the U.S., killing 2,977 people and injuring thousands more. It is the deadliest terrorist attack in history.
As Globe previously reported, a petition was started to try and keep Mamdani from attending the ceremony.
According to Fox, Mamdani previously engaged with internet personality Hasan Piker, who in 2019 said, “America deserved 9/11” (though Mamdani later called the remarks “objectionable and reprehensible”).
Mamdani also appointedRamzi Kassem as the city’s chief legal counsel. Per ABC 7, Kassem once represented an al Qaeda member whose brother-in-law was among the terrorists who hijacked the plane that struck the Pentagon.
Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani said in a recent Newsmax interview, “Having lost friends there, and being very close to many of the families, it offends me that he’s coming.”
At Tuesday’s event, New York City council member Vickie Paladino said she was among the people delivering a petition with more than 101,000 signatures calling for Mamdani’s absence, per Fox.
“I am demanding that he not show his face at that sacred ground,” Paladino said, according to the news outlet. “He does not belong there. We the people do not care for Zohran Mamdani — 101,000 names is not a drop in the bucket.”
“Do not, Zohran Mamdani, take us New Yorkers for granted,” she added. “We were there that day. The sky looked very similar to this. Stay put. Stay in City Hall and promote your propaganda.”
