Cher is opening up about the time she dated film producer and record executive David Geffen.
During the Monday, January 5, episode of Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, the two began talking about what life was like for the “Believe” singer when she moved out on her own in Beverly Hills at age 16.
“Yes,” Cher, now 79, replied. “We moved into this apartment, and when my parents left, we smoked a cigarette in every room!”
Around that time, when Cher met singer Sonny Bono — whom she ended up marrying in 1969 — he actually was into the Moonstruck actress’ girlfriend, who Cher said was “gay.”
Shepard pointed out that was probably “not an issue in the ‘70s cause you also date Geffen for quite a while.”

Cher then revealed more about their romance, which lasted 18 months and began in the 1970s around the same time she was ending her marriage with Bono, who died in 1998 at age 62.
“That’s a different thing,” Cher said regarding her relationship with Geffen, now 82. “He never had been in love with anybody, so I was the first person that he had real feelings for. And so we had a special arrangement when we met.”

Geffen, who came out as gay in 1992, married Donovan Michaels in 2023 — but last year, Geffen filed for divorce.
Cher previously opened up about her relationship with the media mogul in Tom King’s book, The Operator: David Geffen Builds, Buys, and Sells the New Hollywood, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“I was the first person to share his bed and to share his life,” she said, per the publication. “People don’t believe that, or they don’t want to believe it, or they don’t understand how it could be. But we were really crazy about each other.”
