$167M Kentucky Powerball Winner Arrested for 5th Time in 17 Months Since Hitting Jackpot

James Farthing, the Kentucky man who won a record $167.3 million Powerball jackpot, is facing yet another legal case — this time roughly a year and a half after the win that was supposed to change his life for good.

Farthing was arrested early on Sunday, September 20, after deputies found him asleep inside a running Ford Mustang in a Walmart parking lot in Georgetown, Kentucky, LEX 18 reported on Monday, September 21.

Farthing, 51, was charged with alcohol intoxication in a public place.

Authorities were initially called shortly before 3 a.m. after someone reported a Mustang stopped in an intersection. The vehicle later moved into the Walmart lot.

Deputies said Farthing was alone and asleep when they arrived.

An arrest citation alleged he had bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred speech, and trouble maintaining his balance.

Officers also reported smelling alcohol and marijuana.

Farthing claimed a woman drove him there and left, but police said surveillance footage showed no one getting out of the vehicle before officers arrived.

The arrest marks Farthing’s fifth since he and his mother won Kentucky’s largest-ever Powerball jackpot in April 2025, according to People.

As Globe previously reported, Farthing was arrested in July on domestic violence-related charges of first-degree strangulation and fourth-degree assault. He pleaded not guilty, and a judge set his bond at $15,000 while ordering him to have no contact with the alleged victim.

The public intoxication case remains pending in Scott County District Court, where he was scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday, September 22.
