Two men are dead, and two were injured while swimming in the pool of a luxury hotel in India after what investigators suspect was electrocution due to a leak.
According to The Times of India, management of the Conrad Bengaluru is accused of death by negligence after the wife of one of the victims issued a formal complaint to the police. The outlet identified the deceased as Alexander Maximilian Theiss, a German national and Lufthansa crew member, and Juraj Horvat, a Slovak national who worked as a project manager for IBM.
Citing a preliminary report, The Times of India reports Horvat was entering the pool on the hotel’s third floor when he began to scream and writhe. Theiss was swimming nearby and rushed over to help him. When he got close, he reportedly experienced the same pain and writhing. An American guest, Matthew Desantis, and a pool attendant, Rahul Tiwari, were injured trying to help. It is believed that the water electrocuted the men, but it’s unclear at this time how.

However, police have floated the idea that they are looking into a possible electrical leak from the pool’s underwater lights as a possible cause.
All four men were taken to a nearby hospital. Theiss, 57, was pronounced dead on arrival. Attempts were made to revive Horvat, 45, but they were unsuccessful. Desantis and Tiwari’s condition is reportedly stable.
In a separate report, Dr. Mabel Vasnaik, HOD of Emergency Medicine at the hospital the men were taken to, told The Times of India that the men had been electrocuted.
Based on a complaint by Horvat’s wife, Silvia Hotuatova, management of the 5-star hotel was booked on suspicion of death by negligence.
