Trump Administration Removes Criticism of Confederate Memorial From Arlington Cemetery

The Trump administration has erased critical references to the Confederacy from Arlington National Cemetery.

A bronze statue was dismantled in 2023 under a congressional mandate that saw military property cleared of names and imagery honoring the Confederacy and references to the “Lost Cause” narrative.

“The elaborately designed monument offers a nostalgic, mythologized vision of the Confederacy, including highly sanitized depictions of slavery,” a statement on the Arlington National Cemetery website explained of the removed statue, until the current administration wiped it clean on Tuesday, September 8, per Newsweek. “Standing on a 32-foot-tall pedestal, a bronze, classical female figure, crowned with olive leaves, represents the American South…An enslaved woman depicted as a ‘Mammy,’ holding the infant child of a white officer, and an enslaved man following his owner to war.”

According to the Washington Post, similar verbiage was removed from a cemetery marker at Arlington National Cemetery. President Donald Trump‘s administration’s move is a step forward in their plans to return the Confederate Memorial to Arlington in 2027.

“It never should have been taken down by woke lemmings,” Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth shared via X in August 2025. “Unlike the left, we don’t believe in erasing American history — we honor it.”
