Three climbers were confirmed dead after falling more than 18,000 feet from America’s tallest mountain. A fourth is in critical condition.
“It is with the deepest sadness that we announce that three of our friends, talented and experienced climbers, have lost their lives on the icy slopes of this mountain,” Latvian Mountaineering Association shared on Friday, May 29.
The National Park Service reported on Thursday, May 28, that around midnight, four climbers from a seven-member climbing team were reported to have fallen from Mt. McKinley in Denali National Park. The three remaining climbers from the team returned to camp safely.
“Weather conditions on the mountain are improving and will soon enable helicopter operations,” the press release stated. “The extent of injuries and the condition of the climbers remain unknown.”
Located in Alaska, Mt. McKinley stands as the tallest mountain peak in North America at 20,310 feet.
