As Globe previously reported, the chaos inside CBS reached a boiling point when longtime 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley was fired on Tuesday, June 2, after clashing with the network’s new leadership. Pelley, 68, issued a blistering public statement accusing executives of pressuring him to insert “falsehoods and bias” into his reporting and claiming the show was being dismantled “to curry a moment of favor with the Trump administration.”

Pelley alleged that politicians were being allowed to handpick their own interviewers — a practice he called wildly out of step with the show’s standards. “She does not love this place,” Pelley said of newly appointed editor-in-chief Bari Weiss. “She was brought in to kill it and is doing exactly that.”

It is against that backdrop that sources close to the situation say Norah O’Donnell is quietly emerging as a key player in the reshuffled CBS News landscape. Rob Shuter‘s Naughty But Nice Substack reported Thursday, June 4, that while several of the network’s high-profile journalists are reportedly at odds with new management, O’Donnell, 52, is taking a different approach.

“Norah sees an opening,” one network insider told Shuter. “While others are fighting the new regime, she’s figuring out how to succeed under it.”

According to Naughty But Nice, sources say O’Donnell would welcome a more prominent leadership role — potentially becoming the public face of a reimagined CBS News as questions continue to swirl around the future of 60 Minutes.

“Management views her as a team player,” a source told Shuter. “That carries a lot of weight right now.”

Not everyone inside the building sees it that way. “Many journalists are focused on protecting editorial independence,” another insider told the outlet. “Her critics believe she’s focused on protecting her place in the organization.”

For now, insiders say O’Donnell has already chosen her lane. “CBS is entering a new era,” a source said, per the report. “And Norah intends to be part of writing the next chapter.”
