Ben Crump, the civil rights attorney representing Nolan Wells‘ family, has been accused of misrepresenting the United Cajun Navy’s words at a press conference earlier today.

On Wednesday, July 22, Crump spoke at the NAACP convention in Chicago and released the preliminary findings of the independent autopsy report Nolan’s family commissioned. He also spoke about the case and claimed that the United Cajun Navy told him and the Wells family that “Nolan was found face down and fully clothed.”

However, in a post shared via X hours later, the United Cajun Navy pushed back on Crump’s wording.

“@AttorneyCrump we didn’t say Nolan was fully clothed when found,” the organization wrote. “He was wearing only swim trunks. Please don’t misrepresent our words.”

But Todd Terrell — who appeared on Nancy Grace‘s Crime Stories on Tuesday, July 21, and was introduced as representing the United Cajun Navy — contradicted what was stated on X from the organization.

“As I recall, Todd Terrell, Nolan was face down, still fully clothed on the beach. Is that correct?” Grace asked, to which Terrell replied, “Yes, that is correct.”

Nolan traveled with a group of friends to Horn Island off the Mississippi coast over the 4th of July weekend. His friends returned to the mainland, but Nolan did not, and a massive search ensued. Nolan’s body was found two days later.

The investigation into the 18-year-old’s death remains ongoing. On Wednesday, Crump said the preliminary findings from the independent autopsy report commissioned by Nolan’s parents, Christine Wells-Wonsley and Elmore Wonsley, listed the cause of death as “undetermined pending investigation.”

The official autopsy and toxicology results are still pending and authorities have not announced any criminal charges.
