Former LAPD detective Mark Fuhrman, whose discovery of a bloody glove and subsequent perjury conviction became defining moments in the O.J. Simpson murder trial, has died at 74.

Fuhrman died Tuesday, May 12 after battling an aggressive form of throat cancer diagnosed last year, as first reported by TMZ. He had been hospitalized for about a week and ultimately chose to stop treatment, per the outlet. He had been living in Idaho.

Fuhrman became a central figure in the 1995 trial when O.J. Simpson’s defense team used audio recordings of him using racial slurs to undermine his credibility — directly contradicting his sworn testimony. The strategy proved devastating to the prosecution and contributed to Simpson’s acquittal.

In 1996, Fuhrman, then 44, pleaded no contest to a felony perjury charge, as reported by TMZ, making him the only person ever convicted of a crime in connection with the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.

After retiring from the LAPD in August 1995, Fuhrman reinvented himself as a true crime author and television personality, including work as a Fox News expert. No funeral services are planned yet.
