Following the Republican Party’s overwhelming defeat in the 2026 midterm elections, the vice president, 42, issued a lengthy statement via X that appeared to place blame on the president’s decision to go to war with Iran.
“The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026,” Vance wrote on Wednesday, November 4.
“There will be a lot of infighting and arguing over what happened and why that is,” he said. “But the real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone.”
Vance said that, after speaking to a pollster who is “one of the smartest people I know in politics,” he learned that “a lot of Trump 2024 voters were angry and planning to vote for Democrats.”
“He asked those voters who had abandoned us what would cause them to come back on our team,” Vance wrote. “The top four answers, accounting for nearly all of the responses were: 1) End the war 2) Focus on cost of living/inflation 3) Put America First 4) Change our relationship to Israel.”
“The reason we lost is the war,” Vance said bluntly.

An analysis by CNN said Vance’s post “contained multiple not-so-veiled criticisms of his boss’s presidency and second-term strategy” and called it a “remarkable move for a vice president hours just after a devastating White House defeat.”
As CNN pointed out, “Vance also notably defended Fox News host Rachel Campos-Duffy‘s calls for a diplomatic end to the Iran war. Since Trump is widely reported to be considering new strikes, this also signaled a potential breach with the president.”
While many have interpreted Vance’s post as him creating distance between himself and the president, the VP didn’t make any direct statements that imply he and Trump, 80, are at odds.
In fact, Vance shared a video of Trump reacting to his lengthy X post when being asked about it by reporters.
“I know how he feels about it,” Trump said. “I think it was fine. I thought it was good.”
“Pundits were joking on Tuesday that the 2028 presidential campaign would start Wednesday morning,” CNN’s Stephen Collinson wrote. “JD Vance just made it a reality.”
