Corie Walsh, an Illinois woman accused of killing her 2-year-old son, also planned to kill her husband, according to prosecutors.
The 40-year-old appeared in court on Tuesday, September 8, where her legal team argued that she was suffering from a psychotic episode when she allegedly hanged her toddler from a rafter in the family’s basement in Frankfort, Illinois.
“She was severely mentally ill at the time of incident and requires treatment,” defense attorney Robert Kerr said, per a September 9 report by NBC News.
According to prosecutors, however, Walsh discussed plans to poison her husband “with a drink” when he arrived home from work. He has not been identified by name.
Walsh’s two older children, who were at school at the time of the alleged murder, quickly alerted a neighbor to the incident after arriving home, the outlet reported. The neighbor attempted CPR on 2-year-old Barrett, but he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Prosecutors revealed that the neighbor found Walsh fully clothed in a bloody bathtub with injuries to her wrists and thighs. She allegedly admitted to killing her son because “he was the devil,” per NBC News.

A fourth child, an 8-month-old, was also home at the time of the incident, but was left unharmed in an upstairs room, prosecutors said.
As Globe previously reported, Walsh had become invested in the Lindsay Clancycase and discussed it in a group chat with friends hours before her son died. Lindsay was on trial for strangling her own three children with exercise bands. A judge declared a mistrial on September 4 when the jury could not agree on whether she was criminally responsible for the deaths. Clancy’s attorney has argued that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis.
Walsh, who has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder, per police, has not yet entered a plea.
