Hollywood Flashback: Eric Stoltz Out-Foxed In Back To The Future
IT’S hard to imagine Back to the Future, the iconic 1985 teen time-travel blockbuster, without Michael J. Fox zooming back to 1955 in a DeLorean with Christopher Lloyd by his side. But Mask actor Eric Stoltz — who was a much bigger star at the time — was already deep into filming the role of Marty McFly when he got canned!
Stoltz saw the comedy as a tragedy and it rubbed the filmmakers the wrong way. “He wasn’t really a comedian, and they needed a comedian,” costar Lea Thompson has said. “He’s super-funny in real life, but he didn’t approach his work like that!” Fox went on to reshoot all of Stoltz’s scenes.
