Gayle King was said to have a “long future” at CBS after extending her contract earlier this year. However, according to a new report by Page Six, the longtime journalist only signed on for one more year at the network.
The outlet reported on Monday, April 20, that King, 71, “will pivot into a role more in the vein of her former co-anchor Norah O’Donnell, who helmed the network’s coveted Evening News and then became a senior correspondent.”
The news comes just months after a spokesperson for the network told Page Six they “expect” King to remain in her role at CBS for “a very long future.”
Since taking over as boss in October 2025, CBS exec Bari Weiss has been making moves within her network, including tapping King’s CBS Mornings co-host, Tony Dokoupil, for a different role. Earlier this year, Dokoupil was moved to the CBS Evening News anchor position.

As questions about her future unfolded, King — who first joined CBS Mornings in January 2012 — told TMZ in October 2025, “All I can say is this: From what I’m being told inside this building … all I’ve been told by everybody in this building is that they want me here. They like the job I’m doing. I like the job I’m doing!”
After The Wall Street Journal broke the story of King’s contract extension in March, Weiss claimed, “There is only one Gayle King.”
“We’re so proud that she’ll continue to call CBS home. We’re thrilled to have her on in the morning—and equally excited to work with her on new, enterprising projects that bring her talents to new audiences,” Weiss said in a statement, per Variety.
