Nearly a week after surviving a botched execution attempt, Christa Pike‘s condition has improved. According to her legal team, the convicted murderer is awake and speaking, as she continues receiving treatment.
“Against all odds, Christa Pike is conscious, speaking, and continues to receive critical medical care,” her attorneys said in a statement to the AP on Tuesday, October 6.
“Despite the severe damage she endured to her arms, she is still handcuffed and shackled to the bed,” the statement continued. “Her recovery is medically unprecedented. Her prognosis remains unclear but, at a minimum, we expect a long recovery.”
Her attorneys also thanked first responders and hospital staff for treating “Christa like a human,” saying they have “provided exceptional care to her.”
“Christa is a survivor and will take recovery one day at a time,” the statement concluded.
Lee announced on October 3 that Tennessee prison chief Frank Strada has resigned. The governor also halted Tennessee’s remaining executions for 2026 and ordered an independent review into what happened.
Per ABC, that decision also stopped the planned December 3 execution of Gary Wayne Sutton, who has spent more than three decades on death row.
Pike’s failed execution was Tennessee’s second unsuccessful attempt this year, following the aborted May execution of Tony Carruthers.
