Death row inmate Christa Pike‘s lawyers are calling for her death sentence to be commuted to life in prison after Tennessee’s failed attempt to execute her left her unconscious and on a ventilator.
Pike, 50, remained hospitalized in critical condition Sunday, October 4, four days after she survived two doses of the lethal injection drug pentobarbital. Her attorney Stephen Ferrell told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday, October 4, that she had not regained consciousness as far as he was aware.
Doctors are still trying to remove the drug from Pike’s system and it remains unclear whether she will recover, Ferrell revealed, adding, “We don’t know what her physical state will be, but it is clear that she has endured a torturous attempt at executing her.”
Given the circumstances, Pike’s legal team is now urging Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee to “at the very least” commute her death sentence to life imprisonment, he told CNN.

Her attorneys have previously pointed to Pike’s history of childhood abuse and mental health problems in arguing for clemency. They have also raised concerns about whether she could be competent to face another execution if she survives.
Her September 30 execution went dramatically wrong after officials struggled to establish IV access before administering two doses of pentobarbital.
According to a witness, Pike was still alive and loudly snoring long after the curtain closed on her lethal injection, the Daily Mail reported on Thursday, October 1.
Pike survived and was rushed to a hospital, where her attorneys say she suffered significant injuries to both arms.

As Globe previously reported, the fallout has spread beyond Pike’s case. Lee announced on October 3 that Tennessee prison chief Frank Strada has resigned.
Lee also halted Tennessee’s remaining executions for 2026 and ordered an independent review into what happened.
Per ABC, that decision also stopped the planned December 3 execution of Gary Wayne Sutton, who has spent more than three decades on death row.
Pike’s failed execution was Tennessee’s second unsuccessful attempt this year, following the aborted May execution of Tony Carruthers.
