Charles Barkley Advises Parents to ‘Spank’ Their Kids to Avoid Raising the ‘Brats That We Got Today’
Charles Barkley is not afraid to “whoop” his kids — and believes other parents should too.
During a discussion on The Dan Patrick Show on Monday, March 23, Barkley, 63, shared his perspective on the NBA. “The players have so much power now. It’s crazy,” the former NBA star — who played for the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets throughout his career — remarked. “You can’t even yell at them anymore. When you yell at somebody when they do something wrong, that’s called being a coach.”
The sports analyst continued, “People talk about, ‘You can’t yell at your kids.’ Yes hell you can yell at your kids. You whoop their ass too.”
When the host pushed back by responding, “I don’t think you’re allowed to do that,” the Space Jam star shared an example from his childhood.
“One year I made the mistake of getting those Hot Wheels racetracks,” Barkley said, explaining that his grandma used it as “a weapon.” “Man, that was one of the worst decisions ever. Kids, never get those Hot Wheels racetracks.”
“I’m not going around telling people to beat their kids. But I think if you don’t spank your kids and discipline them, they turn into some of these brats that we got today,” the former athlete continued. “I’m not here for child abuse. But how are kids going to know they’re doing something wrong?”
Barkley is the father of one daughter, Christiana, whom he shares with wife Maureen Blumhardt. He also has two grandchildren as of 2023.
