Bride’s Wedding Joy Turns to Grief After Father Passes Away Hours After Walking Her Down the Aisle

A Kentucky bride lost her father just hours after he walked her down the aisle, turning a day of celebration into a devastating family tragedy.

People reported Monday, August 3, that Hannah Sheets, 21, married Dylan Sheets, 20, on July 25 at Red Gate Farm and Vineyard in Quincy, Kentucky, after dating for three years. Hannah’s father, Patrick McLain, 48, walked her down the aisle that afternoon. By that evening, he was gone.

Hannah told the outlet, “I was completely in shock and heartbroken,” after learning of her father’s sudden death less than seven hours after the ceremony.

McLain had appeared healthy throughout the day, with no signs pointing to any decline in his health, she said. The couple shared a heartfelt first look before the ceremony, during which McLain repeatedly told his daughter how proud he was of her. He walked her down the aisle at 1:30 p.m., squeezing her hand three times before handing her off to Dylan.

Hours later, at 8:08 p.m., Hannah received word he had died, as per People.

McLain’s loved ones remembered his final hours in a moving obituary: “Patrick spent his final day on earth surrounded by the family he loved so deeply, celebrating his daughter’s wedding. He proudly walked her down the aisle and was heard saying that day that he had accomplished everything he ever wanted in life.”

McLain built his career around protecting others. He joined the West Virginia Army National Guard after the September 11 terrorist attacks. He served two deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 1-150th B Troop, earning numerous awards for heroism over 22 years, according to his obituary. He carried that same drive into civilian life, working with several police departments and in emergency medical services before retiring as a federal security officer.

While navigating her deep grief, Hannah said her father’s presence throughout the wedding, including their father-daughter dance, meant everything, even though neither of them knew it would be their last time together.

Dylan, who secured McLain’s blessing before proposing last year, has remained by his wife’s side through the loss. The cause of his death has not been determined yet.
