Best-selling author Mel Robbins opened up about the state of the world in a recent podcast episode, and admitted to feeling like “life just isn’t fun anymore.”
“Everybody, everywhere is kind of experiencing this,” Robbins, 57, said on the October 6 episode of her The Mel Robbins Podcast. “There’s been this massive shift. We’re all so weighed down by everything going on in the world.”
Robbins explained that “fun isn’t optional” or “just some frivolous thing” but rather an essential part of one’s overall happiness and health.
“Micro-moments of fun, I’m talking laughter, silliness, joy, they’re critical for happiness, resilience,” Robbins, the author of The Let Them Theory, added. “Fun is how you feel alive again.”

According to Robbins, her idea of “fun” could be as simple as swapping out her daily glasses for a fun neon pink pair.
“Fun doesn’t have to be some big production,” she continued. “You don’t necessarily have to dress up in a costume to have fun…Being a little chattier, a little more energizing, telling a funny story before a meeting can be fun.”
Robbins goes on to cite Dr. Judith Joseph whose research found that “small, daily moments of joy and fun are essential for your life and your health. Happiness is created by increasing the small moments of joy, of fun, of laughter, of silliness. Not having small moments of joy, silliness, playfulness, laughter — not having these things in your life can be a cause of burnout.”
