Two people escaped unharmed after a small aircraft crashed and landed upside down in Southern California on Sunday, authorities said.

The Kern County Fire Department said firefighters responded to a report of a crashed aircraft on the south side of E. Lerdo Highway near Minter Field Airport in Shafter, about 125 miles northwest of Los Angeles, shortly after 11 a.m. on Sunday. They arrived to find the small aircraft upside down in the middle of a vegetable field with no smoke or fire visible.

Both occupants of the aircraft had already made it safely out, and refused medical treatment at the scene, the fire department said.

“The crew assessed the plane and confirmed that there were no other victims or immediate hazards,” fire officials said. “We are grateful for the safety of the individuals involved and relieved that we did not need to put our training into use.”

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the cause of the crash.
