Ahead of Stress Awareness Month in April, former Harvard psychologist, executive coach, and mother of four Anne Welsh is highlighting the challenges and solutions for managing stress — especially for working parents.

According to Welsh, parenthood enhances valuable leadership skills, including resilience, prioritization, and emotional intelligence, and she offers a fresh perspective on managing stress without sacrificing professional aspirations.

“Working parents are often told that stress is just part of the job, but the real issue isnt individual — its systemic,” Welsh says. “We dont need more unrealistic self-care tips; we need workplace cultures and policies that recognize the invisible labor parents carry. When we stop treating stress as a personal failing and start addressing it as a leadership and organizational challenge, everyone benefits.”

Welsh refutes that working mothers must shrink their ambitions to reduce stress, and says working parents can rethink stress management with practical mindset shifts toavoid burnout, and thrive in both their professional and personal lives.

According to Welsh, a recognized thought leader on working parenthood, womens leadership, and corporate culture, common — but changeable — workplace policies exacerbate stress. But even under those conditions, she offers working parents realistic ways to integrate career and caregiving.

Through her consulting work, and using her experience as both a clinical psychologist and a mother, Welsh supports businesses in creating policies that aid working parents, advocating for a comprehensive approach to leadership development.
