With new tariffs making headlines, the focus is shifting to their potential impact on American households. As costs rise, the ripple effects are expected to touch various aspects of daily life, from grocery shopping to entertainment choices.

Rita McGrath, a professor at Columbia Business School and a leading expert on strategy and innovation, highlights the economic and human realities of a tariff-driven economy. She emphasizes the challenges faced by consumers, particularly those living paycheck to paycheck, as they navigate these changes.

“Consumers — especially at the lower end of incomes — will have a tough time insulating themselves from the impact of these tariffs,” McGrath said. “For many, it may mean real, personal changes: less spending, fewer luxuries, and growing financial anxiety and hardship.”

McGrath points out that tariffs act as lifestyle disruptors, forcing consumers to cut back on non-essentials like streaming services and luxury coffees. The financial burden could range from $1,500 to $5,000 annually for the average American family, with immediate effects on food and plants, and later on appliances, cars and household items.

She also warns of hidden inflation, where companies might quietly raise prices on items not directly affected by tariffs. While discount retailers like Costco and Aldi may benefit, other sectors could suffer.

Reflecting on historical precedents, McGrath notes that tariffs on washing machines during Trump’s first term led to $1.5 billion in higher costs for consumers. She cautions that similar effects could spread again.
