Hollywood legend Robert Redford — who recently died at 89 — never wanted to make the beloved 1973 weepie The Way We Were, about a politically mismatched college romance that sputters and dies but seems to live on interminably in moviegoers’ hearts.

Redford didn’t want to work with Barbra Streisand, who had a reputation for being difficult as well as having an unrequited crush on him, and he didn’t think Barbra’s monster-hit title song should be in the movie. He eventually admitted he was wrong about the song, and he solved at least a bit of the other problem by wearing TWO pairs of underwear during their love scenes!
