Police officers in upstate New York this week helped rescue a horse that fell through the ice of a frozen pond, dramatic video shows.

The Saratoga Springs Police Department said a 911 caller reported a horse was stuck in a frigid pond after falling through the ice at around 3:45 p.m. Monday, and was in danger of freezing to death.

Officer Kyle Clinton was the first to arrive on scene, and began helping the horse’s owner, trying to pull the animal out with a rope. Officers Kris Camarro and Dominic Martuscello arrived soon after to assist.

Body-worn camera video shows the horse thrashing in distress, surrounded by chunks of broken ice in the partially frozen pond. They try to get the horse to slide onto its side as they work together pulling the rope. Working as a team, they continue pulling the rope, until eventually the horse is freed.

Once on solid ground, the horse managed to get back to its feet, and it was walked to a nearby barn to receive veterinary care.

“The determined effort, strength and teamwork displayed by our officers serve as an excellent example of the character this department observes among its personnel on a daily basis,” police said. “We are proud of their work and are grateful for the opportunity to share this incident with the Saratoga Springs community. Please join us in congratulating them on a job well done.”
